The Best T-shirt Quilts of 2021 - Part 1 of 4

T-shirt Quilt Details  |  The Best of

Each December I go through photos of the T-shirt quilts we made over the past 12 months. The photographs below shows some of the quilts we made in 2021. There are a lot of them! And there are even more than are shown here in this thumbnail shot of them.   2021 Quilts - thumbnails of most of the quilts made in 2021

It's so difficult to choose which quilts to include in the Best T-shirt Quilts of 2021. This year I have chosen 50 some-odd quilts and pillows to share with you. I just couldn't decide. This is way too many quilts to look at all at once. So, I will break this into 4 parts.

This first group of awesome quilts we made in 2021 are high school and college T-shirt quilts.

High School Graduation T-shirt Quilt Examples

High school T-shirt quilt by Too cool T-shirt quilts

Sevier County High School "Smoky Bears" T-shirt Quilt

Style: Regular

Border: 4" pieced border

Size: 80" x 96" In the range of a full size.

I love how this graduation T-shirt quilt stays in the purple and teal family along with black, white and gray. It makes for a cohesive look to the quilt.

The border was made with the extra T-shirt material from the colorful T-shirts within the quilt. This adds another layer of cohesion.

It looks like this was from the class of 2019. That's ok. We made high school graduation quilts from many different classes each year.

University of Detroit Jesuit High School T-shirt Quilt

Style: Regular

Border: 2" solid border

Size: 52" x 64"  Large Lap Size

I like how this quilt is bright a cheerful. The neon T-shirts brighten it up.

I also like how this showcases many different activities outside of school.

Some high school quilts we make are all about school and school activities.  Others, like this one, encompass a broad range of activities.

Which one you would choose for your graduate depends on what they did during high school. The T-shirts you choose to include in your quilt should reflect your child.

High School - Bessemer City

Bessemer City High School T-shirt Quilt

Style: Regular

Border: 2" solid outer + 4" pieced +2" solid inner border

Size: 68" x 76"  Between standard sizes

Green, black, yellow and a little gray. This quilt just sings!

The 2" solid outer + 4" pieced +2" solid inner border is such a wonderful frame for a quilt. It draws your eyes into the quilt. And it also gives your eyes a resting place.

Sandpoint High School T-shirt Quilt

Style: Regular

Border:  4" solid +2" solid inner border

Size: 96" x 108" Between standard sizes

This quilt is a little hard to make out as a graduation quilt. There is so much going on that is not high school related. This quilt is about the graduate and not the school they attended.

River Hill High School T-shirt Quilt

Style: Regular

Border:  None

Size: 52" x 64" Large lap size.

This quilt is a much smaller quilt that the one directly above this one.

We make a lot of graduation T-shirt quilts this size and without borders.

This size is great for kids with 20 to 30 T-shirts.

How many T-shirts for a quilt?

La Canada High School T-shirt Quilt

Style: Regular

Border:  4" pieced + 2" solid inner border

Size: 96" x 104" Between a Queen and King Size

The border on this quilt makes this colorful quilt even more colorful.

The border is ombre or rainbow colors.

We have used this ombre border before.  If you would this effect on your border, it does cost a little more than a standard pieced border. It takes a lot of time to develop the ombre effect.

Other unique border options.

College T-shirt Quilt Examples

U of ILL T-shirt quilt by Too cool T-shirt quilts

University of Illinois T-shirt Quilt

Style: Regular

Border:  4" pieced border

Size: 96" x 108" This is 4" shorter and narrower than a standard king size quilt.

This quilt has a lot of T-shirts! I haven't counted, but I would guess there are more than 60 T-shirts used in this quilt.

This was made for a graduate of Illinois. A quilt we would make for an alumnus would have a different mix of T-shirts. They would have fewer event T-shirts and more generic Illinois T-shirts.

Duke T-shirt quilt by Too cool T-shirt quilts

Duke Swimming T-shirt Quilt

Style: Regular

Border:  4" solid +2" solid inner border

Size: 60" x 68" This is 4" shorter than our multi use size.

I like the 4" royal blue outer border followed by the 2" inner black border. It funnels your eyes onto the quilt. Then the black keeps your eyes on the quilt.

Duke T-shirt quilt by Too cool T-shirt quilts

Colorful Duke T-shirt Quilt

Style: Regular

Border:  No border

Size: 60" x 80" This is 4" shorter than a twin size.

While this quilt reads Duke, it also tells a story beyond what happened while attending Duke.

If you have a monochromatic quilt like the Duke quilt above, but also have other T-shirts of different colors, you have to consider if you want to stay with the blue, gray, black and white or add in your other colors.

Adding in one or two colors might not work as well as adding in a number of colors. This is because one colored T-shirt would make your eye go there every time.

This quilt works because there are so many colored T-shirts among the Duke blue, white, gray and black.

Golden State Warriors T-shirt quilt by Too cool T-shirt quilts

Golden State Warriors T-shirt Quilt

Style: Regular

Border:  4" pieced +2" solid inner border

Size: 112" x 112" Over sized

You would need a large bed for this quilt. Or a big wall to hang it on.

This quilt has a number of T-shirts that are duplicates. Can you find them.

If the customer had wanted, we could have removed the duplicate or similar T-shirts to make the quilt smaller. But they have the bed for the quilt.

Notre Dame T-shirt quilt by Too cool T-shirt quilts

Colorful Notre Dame T-shirt Quilt

Style: Regular

Border:  No border

Size: 60" x 72" Multi Use Size

Notre Dame has a lot of school colors - green, dark royal or light navy, yellow and gold.

We have made 30 or 40 Notre Dame T-shirt quilts over the years. I always like tracing the Fighting Irish guy when I quilt these quilts.

Clemson T-shirt quilt by Too cool T-shirt quilts

Clemson T-shirt Quilt

Style: Regular

Border:  4" pieced +2" solid inner border

Size: 52" x 60" This is 4" shorter than a large lap size.

This customer had a so many gold shirts with just the small chest logo.

We decided to use these as part of a 4" pieced border. This would not have worked well without the 2" solid purple border.
