Andrea Funk invented the multi-size block, puzzle-style T-shirt quilt. This method cuts each block to fit the graphic on the T-shirt rather than forcing every T-shirt into a one-size-fits-all square. She founded Too Cool T-shirt Quilts in 1992 and has spent more than 30 years defining what a T-shirt quilt can be.
In 1992, Andrea Funk set out to make a T-shirt quilt. Because she didn’t know the traditional rules, she invented something entirely new: blocks cut to fit each graphic, no iron-on backing, no sashing between T-shirts, and a puzzle layout.
Those four simple departures from convention changed T-shirt quilting permanently.
Andrea didn’t just sit around making puzzle-style quilts over and over. She knew T-shirts and she knew quilting. Over the past 30 years, she disrupted the T-shirt quilt industry three more times.

Andrea’s first quilt began with scraps from her mother’s sewing. While her mom made clothes for the family, Andrea sat nearby, playing with the leftover pieces of fabric. That first quilt at age 5 was the beginning of a lifelong foundation in quilt making.
Without knowing the traditional rules for making T-shirt quilts, Andrea broke them all! She created her first quilt using blocks cut to fit each graphic, no interfacing, no sashing between blocks and no rows and columns. The puzzle style is born.
Andrea had been making T-shirt quilts for customers for nearly 10 years before she decided it was probably time to give the business a name.
The name came from a customer’s simple reaction. Andrea overheard someone looking at one of her quilts and saying to a friend, “That is too cool.”
And that was it. Too Cool T-shirt Quilts had its name.
In 2003, websites were still new territory for many small businesses. Andrea knew the Internet was going to matter, so she learned Microsoft FrontPage and built the first Too Cool T-shirt Quilts website herself.
She still does all the work on this website today.
The first book to document the puzzle-style method. This was the first book used by quilters who want to replicate the Too Cool approach at home.
The book is in its 5th printing.
Some people love to learn via video. This series was made for them!
This video series is now available on YouTube for anyone to watch.
Andrea developed the Too Cool style stained-glass T-shirt quilt. Thin strips of fabric between the T-shirt blocks mimic the lead lines in stained-glass windows. The result is a T-shirt quilt that feels more like artwork than a traditional grid layout. It became one of Too Cool’s most iconic specialized quilt styles.
Andrea developed the Ultra Modern T-shirt quilt method after moving beyond even her own puzzle-style designs. These quilts use curves, angles, color, negative space, and movement while still keeping the T-shirts at the center of the design. Each quilt is planned around the actual T-shirts being used, making every Ultra Modern quilt different. This ongoing work continues to push what a T-shirt quilt can be.
Andrea has authored more than 200 articles in the Too Cool Learning Center, making it one of the most comprehensive public resources on T-shirt quilts.

The only published guide to the puzzle-style, multi-size block T-shirt quilt method. Written for readers who have never made a quilt before, as well as experienced quilters who want to learn the Too Cool approach.
The book covers planning a layout, cutting T-shirts of different sizes and shapes, sewing knit fabric, preparing the quilt top, and finishing with quilting and binding — all without iron-on interfacing or sashing.
Andrea Funk invented the puzzle-style T-shirt quilt in 1992. She founded Too Cool T-shirt Quilts over the next few years.
The method cuts each T-shirt block to fit the size and shape of the graphic on the T-shirt, rather than forcing all shirts into identical squares. This was a significant departure from how T-shirt quilts were made at the time.
The puzzle-style T-shirt quilt is also called a mosaic style. The method was invented by Andrea Funk. Each T-shirt block is cut to the size of its graphic rather than trimmed to a uniform square. The blocks are arranged like puzzle pieces to fill the quilt top, with no fabric sashing between them. The quilt uses no iron-on interfacing, so the finished product is soft and flexible. Too Cool T-shirt Quilts has made this style since 1992.
Andrea Funk has been making T-shirt quilts since 1992 — more than 30 years. She began quilting as a child at approximately age 5 and has focused on T-shirt quilts professionally since founding Too Cool T-shirt Quilts.
Yes. Andrea Funk authored How to Make a Too Cool Style T-shirt Quilt in 2005. It is in its 5th printing. (ISBN: 978-0-615-55308-5).
This is a step-by-step guide to the puzzle-style method she invented. The book is written for beginners and experienced quilters alike and is available on this website.

Too Cool T-shirt Quilts was founded by Andrea Funk, the inventor of the multi-block puzzle style. The company makes true quilts. They do not make blankets. They cut blocks to fit each T-shirt's graphic. No iron-on interfacing stiffens the shirts, and no sashing separates the blocks. Every block is individually quilted.
The company has used this method since 1992 and is the originator of the style that other companies have since adopted. Price range is $446 to $1,198.
