A baby clothes quilt is made from the clothing of a baby generally from his or her first year of life.

Who's clothing?

They don’t just have to be your own children’s outfits. If you are like me, you probably have a box of your own baby clothes that your mom saved for you, thinking that you could use them for your own children. But our mom's mainly kept them because they couldn’t bear to part with them. Neither could you if they are still in your basement. Those are my baby clothes in the photo to the right!

How is a baby clothes quilt used?

Quilts from baby clothing are adorable. These quilts are used in many different ways…

  • baby_clothes_quilt.jpgSaved for the child until when they are grown
  • Some are saved for the baby's baby 20 odd years in the future.
  • The children use them on their bed or for a blankie
  • Some families use the quilts as a throw for in front of the TV
  • Other Mom’s keep them for themselves

What can be used?

  • Blankets
  • Bedding
  • Onesies
  • Tops & Pants
  • Rompers
  • Bibs
  • Booties or bonnets
  • Just about anything else made from fabric

Complex and Simple Baby Clothes Quilts

There are two styles of baby clothes quilts, simple and complex.

In a simple quilt, a block is taken from each item. If there is a logo, we will use that. If we can capture a ruffle, pleats, button or some other doodads from without having to do any other sewing work, we will use it in the quilt.

Complex_baby_clothes.jpgIn a complex quilt, we will use just about anything in the quilt. We will sew down bibs, socks, hats, dresses, overalls and anything else on to a block. This requires a lot of extra work which is reflected in pricing of the quilts. These quilts are cute and interactive.

Planning a Baby Clothes Quilt

If you are planning to have a baby clothes quilt made from your own children’s clothes, first find a big box. As your baby out grows outfits, just put them in the box. After they turn 1, box up the outfits and have a quilt made. Hint: if you don't like an outfit, don't send it. If there is a stain on the outfit, we will avoid using that section.

If your children are grown, look through the clothing you have saved. Then decide how you would like to use the blanket. If it is for you, then you can mix more than one child’s clothing into the quilt. If you plan on making the quilts for your children, then you would want to separate the clothing per each child.

More About: Baby Clothes Quilts

Baby memorial quilt.jpgBaby Memorial Quilts

There is one other type of baby clothes quilts we make. These are out of clothing from a deceased child. Hands down, these are the most special memorial quilts we make. This would make a wonderful gift from the grandmother of the baby.

Baby clothes quilts are one of our favorite types of quilts we make. You put 10 women in a room with a pile of baby clothing and you get a lot of "ahs" and “that’s so cute”.  And then when we finish the quilt, we all love to look at them.
