Project Repat and Too Cool T-shirt Quilts may start with the same T-shirts, but they produce fundamentally different products.
If you want a true quilt instead of a fleece-backed blanket, if you want to keep your T-shirt graphics from being cropped, if you want a more interesting design than a standard grid, and if you want to send in whole T-shirts without cutting them yourself, Too Cool may be the better fit.
Project Repat makes a fleece-backed T-shirt blanket. Too Cool T-shirt Quilts makes a quilt.
With Project Repat, the T-shirt squares are sewn together to create the front, then fleece is attached to the back. There is no batting between the layers and the front and back are not quilted together throughout the blanket.
A Too Cool T-shirt Quilt has a T-shirt quilt top, batting, backing, binding, and longarm quilting that joins all three layers together.
That is not a small construction difference. They are two fundamentally different products.
If you want a lightweight fleece-backed blanket, Project Repat may be exactly what you are looking for. If you want a T-shirt quilt, Too Cool T-shirt Quilts is your girl.
Project Repat offers different block sizes, but every block in your blanket must be the same size. You choose one size, and every T-shirt graphic has to fit within it. If a graphic is too large for that block size, it gets cropped. If it is much smaller, it still gets the same amount of space.
But T-shirt graphics are not all the same size.
If your graphic is larger than the block, Project Repat says the edges of the design will be cropped. That can mean losing words, dates, artwork, or other parts of the T-shirt you wanted to preserve.
Too Cool T-shirt Quilts does not force every graphic into the same-size block. We use variable-size blocks, so a small chest logo can stay small and a large graphic can stay large.
The quilt is designed and puzzled around your T-shirts, rather than cutting your T-shirts to fit the design.
Project Repat uses a checkerboard layout. Every T-shirt block is the same size and arranged in straight rows and columns.
That works if you like a very uniform look. But it also means every graphic gets treated the same, whether it is a tiny chest logo, a wide concert design, or the most important T-shirt in the entire collection.
Too Cool T-shirt Quilts does not use a checkerboard layout. We use different-size blocks and puzzle them to create movement, balance, and visual interest across the quilt.
Small graphics can stay small. Large graphics can stay large. Important T-shirts can stand out. And the finished quilt does not have to look like every other T-shirt quilt made from identical squares.
Your T-shirts are all different. We think the design should reflect that.
Project Repat asks customers to cut apart their T-shirts before sending them in. You separate the front from the back along the side seams, leaving enough fabric for them to cut the final square.
If you send the shirts whole, Project Repat charges an additional fee to do that prep work for you.
At Too Cool T-shirt Quilts, you send us the whole T-shirt.
We do all the cutting. We can see the entire graphic before we decide where to cut, how much fabric to leave around it, and what size block will work best in your quilt.
That matters when the T-shirts are important, sentimental, or impossible to replace.
You choose the T-shirts. We take it from there.
Project Repat’s advertised price may not be the final price.
They charge extra for some of the things that commonly show up in real T-shirt collections, including sending whole T-shirts, pieces that need backing, hole repairs, and removing certain embellishments.
Those charges can add up quickly, especially if several of your T-shirts need extra handling.
At Too Cool T-shirt Quilts, unusual materials and details are not automatically a problem. We work with patches, mesh, jersey material, embellishments, and other oddball pieces all the time.
In fact, those are often the things that make a quilt more interesting.
Before comparing prices, make sure you are comparing the final cost, not just the starting price.
We did not have to guess what the difference would be.
We sent the same group of T-shirts to Project Repat and used the same shirts to make a Too Cool T-shirt Quilt.
The results were dramatically different.
The Project Repat blanket used same-size squares arranged in a checkerboard layout. Graphics had to fit the selected panel size, and larger designs could be cropped.
The Too Cool quilt used variable-size blocks. Large graphics stayed large. Small graphics stayed small. The layout was designed around the T-shirts instead of forcing every shirt into the same-size square.

Too Cool T-shirt Quilts is for you if you want a true quilt, want your graphics kept as intact as possible, prefer a more interesting design than rows of same-size squares, and want to send us your whole T-shirts and let us handle the cutting.
It really comes down to what you want your T-shirts to become.
