We group our Ultra Modern styles into three collections: Mixed Color, Color-Driven, and One-of-a-Kind Ultra Modern Designs.
Most T-shirt collections fit best in the Mixed Color group. Some designs need specific colors or sizes. If you are not sure what will work, we can help you figure that out.

In the winter of 2025, Andrea was bored. After years of making T-shirt quilts, she wanted to see what else was possible. Andrea started with a Flare design thinking that it was the new style.
But after making five Flare quilts, Andrea realized something bigger. Flare was not the new style. The method behind it was.
That method opened the door to designing T-shirt quilts with curves, angles, color, negative space, and movement all while using your T-shirts. Once she realized she had developed a methodology, one design turned into many.
Ultra Modern designs are not made with a one-size-fits-all system. Each quilt is different and built around your T-shirts. An Ultra Modern T-shirt quilt is a fun way to showcase the graphics from your T-shirts.
That is what makes this collection so different, and why the design possibilities are limitless.

Ultra Modern T-shirt quilts are not for everyone. And that’s ok. Not every T-shirt quilt needs curves, movement, bold shapes, or an unexpected layout.
An Ultra Modern quilt may be right for you if you are looking for something very different from a traditional T-shirt quilt. These designs are for people who like modern layouts, strong movement, unusual shapes, and quilts without rows of T-shirts.
They also cost more than our puzzle-style T-shirt quilts. Ultra Modern quilts require more design time, more planning, and more complex construction. If you are looking for the lowest-cost way to use your T-shirts, one of our other T-shirt quilt styles may be a better fit.
Your T-shirts matter too. Some Ultra Modern styles can be made from almost any mixed stack of T-shirts. Others need specific colors, strong contrast, or enough T-shirts to make the design work.

Choosing an Ultra Modern T-shirt quilt style is not just about picking the design you like best. Your T-shirts have a say in the decision too.
Some styles work well with a mixed stack of T-shirts of different colors and graphic sizes. Other styles need specific colors, strong contrast, or a certain number of T-shirts to make the design work. A few styles, such as the Yin Yang, can only be made in a specific size while others must be square.
Before you fall in love with one design, keep this in mind: the best Ultra Modern style is the one that works with your actual T-shirts.
Start by looking at the three groups below. Mixed Color styles work for most T-shirt collections. Color-Driven styles need specific color combinations. One-of-a-Kind Ultra Modern Designs are more specialized and may depend on the T-shirts you have and the size quilt you want.
If you are not sure which group your T-shirts fit in, do not worry. You don’t have to figure it out alone.
Below is an explanation of the three collections.
If your T-shirts have a mix of designs, colors, and graphic sizes, start here. These Ultra Modern styles are the best fit for most T-shirt collections because they do not require one specific color plan.
Your T-shirts can be from different events, schools, teams, vacations, races, or years. They do not have to match. The variety is what gives these designs movement and interest.
The Arch style is created using interlocking arcs. By the positioning of dark and light-colored T-shirts, the arches pop off the quilt. The arches also lead your eye from one section of the quilt to another.
The Broken Glass style is created by intersecting lines drawn from one side of the quilt to another. The angles meet and cross at some crazy angles. This style of quilt is great for a group of T-shirts that have a variety of design sizes.
The Kaleidoscope style is reminiscent of looking through a kaleidoscope. The graphics move out from the center point. The graphics are positioned to read into the center of the quilt. As a result, there is no upside-down or right-side-up to the quilt.
Andrea was walking on a flagstone walkway when this design popped into her head. Each block is created with straight edges and fit together like pieces of a flagstone path. This style works well with any grouping of T-shirts. It can also work well with a group of T-shirts with one color plus black, white, and gray.
Believe it or not, this is a traditional block-style T-shirt quilt turned at a 45-degree angle and made squiggly. You would never know it. A few changes take a traditional style and turn it on its head! This is a style designed for fun.
This began as a Flare style, which was combined with an off-center Bullseye, resulting in a design that can be used with any grouping of T-shirts that has multiple sizes of graphics.
This quilt’s T-shirts all feature moose.
The quilts in this collection are driven by specific color combinations. Unlike the Mixed Color styles, these designs only work with the right colored T-shirts.
Your T-shirt collection might fit one of these designs perfectly, especially if you have a color pallet with one or two colors.
In a Bullseye style T-shirt quilt, each ring needs to be a different color. This quilt is also limited to being square, and the size is about 90″ x 90″.
The outer ring in this quilt has 17 green T-shirts. If we make this style of quilt for you, you would need to have a comparable number of T-shirts for this outer ring.
A Flare style quilt can be made with a number of different color combinations. Each flare needs to be a different color than its neighbor. So each flare can be a different color, or you can alternate colors. The colors in each flare need to be very close in color. A big jump in color will not look good.
Ah, the classic Yin Yang design. This style of quilt can only have two colors, and those colors have to be contrasting. This would work great with two different sports teams, two schools, or any T-shirt collection that naturally divides into two color groups. You would also need enough T-shirts in each color to fill both sides of the design.
This quilt also has to be square and will be about 88" x 88".
This quilt is a Broken Glass style with a big upgrade. We added the white Block S and let the green be the background. The cool thing about this quilt is that the S is integrated in with the quilt. The lines going from side to side cross through the S without stopping.
We can use any block letter - even an M.
This is a Broken Glass style quilt with red dots. This works because the dots are all one color and stand out from the gray background colors.
This style would work well with any group of T-shirts if the dot color stands out and is not used anywhere else in the quilt. For example, if the dots are white and the rest of the quilt is colorful.
This is a Broken Glass style with a Christmas tree in a different color than the back ground. A simple shape or design can be added in a contrasting color so it stands out from the background T-shirts. If you have an idea you would like to explore, email us!
These T-shirt quilts show what can be done with T-shirts when the design is not limited to rows, blocks, or a standard layout. Some of these designs are color-driven, while others would work with almost any group of T-shirts.

The black compass points stand out beautifully against the colorful background. All the graphics are oriented toward the center of the quilt, which gives the whole design a strong focal point.
This style takes some specific-sized graphics. The black points have very small designs toward the tip of each point. That said, the compass points could also be made from solid color T-shirt fabric.
This style can work with almost any grouping of T-shirts because the circles let us use a wide range of graphic sizes. The challenge is that each circle becomes its own separate focal point, so the overall quilt may feel less connected than some of our other Ultra Modern styles.
This quilt is very difficult to make because the circles are not appliquéd on the surface. They are sewn in to become part of the quilt top itself.
This quilt takes a specific grouping of T-shirts. The colors in this quilt are greens, maroons, and blues, and they move from dark to light as they get closer to the center. This is a good choice if you want the quilt to feel organized, dramatic, and centered around a strong visual pull.
We used about 25 T-shirts. For a quilt this size, that is not a lot of T-shirts, so each one had to be placed with a purpose.
The quilt combines a Broken Glass design with circles. This gives your eye a lot of places to look. Choose this style if you want a quilt with lots of movement and small surprises throughout the design.
A quilt like this can be made with any grouping of T-shirts. Right now, this is the only one of this style that we have made.
This is a new design we are working on. The design is made up of arcs that start and stop throughout the quilt. This makes some very interesting shapes.
This would be a great style for any grouping of T-shirts. It’s a great quilt if you are looking for something whimsical and full of motion.
This is a very strange T-shirt quilt. At first, I did not like it at all. But it is growing on me.
This is a smaller-sized quilt and only needs 12 T-shirts. The T-shirts can be any color you want, or they can be in a color family like the quilt here.
If you want a small quilt and only have a few T-shirts, this might be an option.
This Halloween Spider Web quilt is insane. You can see how the orange and black T-shirts alternate. This takes a very specific group of T-shirts. This is one-of-a-kind!
This Bicycle Wheel T-shirt quilt can be made from your bicycle jerseys, but it is difficult and meticulous to make. Because of the extra time involved, this style will cost more than any of our other Ultra Modern designs.
It takes 18 bicycle jerseys.
This quilt has a lot of special things going on. The T-shirts flow from white to black, so it takes a very specific set of T-shirts. The spiral also twists in and out instead of following a straight line, giving the quilt a wavy feel.
The thin red lines arc out from the center, adding another layer of depth. This quilt is a great example of how far an Ultra Modern T-shirt quilt design can go.
The T-shirts in this quilt spiral out from the center of the quilt. The colors flow in an ombre fashion within each color family.
If this design is something you are interested in, start with your T-shirts. Lay them out in an ombre fashion and see if you like how the colors flow. If you do not like how your T-shirts flow, this might not be the right style for your T-shirts.
This is a totally experimental quilt. We have not yet made it with T-shirts. This example is made with blue jeans. We could make this quilt with T-shirts or blue jeans.
The colors do not have to fade outward like this blue jeans example. The T-shirts could look more like our Sunrise Style.
The Aperture style quilt starts with a 14-sided polygon that the T-shirts twist out from. This quilt would take 14 different color groupings. You could make every other ray a different color or mix up the rays. But each ray needs to be the same color and needs to be a different color than each of its neighboring rays.
The rays would take between 1 and 5 T-shirts.
Ultra Modern T-shirt quilts cost more than our puzzle-style quilts because the design and construction are more complex. These quilts take more planning, more layout work, and more time to make.

Some designs must be square.
Bullseye and Yin Yang quilts can only be made approximately 92" x 92".
Flare quilts cannot be smaller than Full Size: 84" x 92".
