Football jerseys, hockey jerseys, bike jerseys, and technical fabric T-shirts are not regular cotton T-shirts.
A Jersey Quilt is designed around athletic fabrics and the details on them. Names, numbers, logos, pockets, zippers, and the stories behind each jersey can all become part of one finished quilt.
Do Your T-shirts Fit Into the Jersey Category?
A Jersey Quilt is a quilt made with athletic jerseys, technical fabric T-shirts, or other washable sports clothing. This can include football jerseys, hockey jerseys, bike jerseys, soccer jerseys, baseball jerseys, running shirts, and similar clothing.
The biggest difference between a Jersey Quilt and a regular T-shirt quilt is the fabric. Most T-shirts are made from cotton or a cotton blend. Jerseys and athletic shirts are often made from mesh, nylon, spandex, Lycra, polyester, or other technical fabrics.
Those fabrics can stretch, slide, or have holes in them. They need to be handled differently than regular T-shirt fabric.
A Jersey Quilt is still made in our puzzle style layout with different size blocks. The difference is that the layout also has to work with the fabric and the details on each item. Names, numbers, logos, sleeves, pockets, zippers, and other parts of the jersey may all be included in the quilt.
This is why a Jersey Quilt is not just a regular T-shirt quilt with sports shirts in it. It is designed for the fabric, the graphics, and the story behind the jerseys.
This is one of the biggest questions we get.
Not every T-shirt belongs in the Jersey Quilt category. A regular cotton T-shirt usually belongs in an Original T-shirt Quilt. A jersey or technical fabric T-shirt usually belongs in a Jersey Quilt.
The difference is the fabric.
If your T-shirt feels like a regular soft cotton T-shirt, it is probably not a jersey. If it feels slick, stretchy, lightweight, shiny, mesh, or like something made for sports, running, biking, or working out, it probably fits into the Jersey Quilt category.
Jersey Quilt items may include:
Football jerseys
Hockey jerseys
Bike jerseys
Soccer jerseys
Basketball jerseys
Baseball jerseys
Moisture wicking shirts
Technical fabric T-shirts
These fabrics do not behave like regular cotton T-shirts. Some stretch more. Some slide around. Some have holes in the fabric. Some can melt if they are ironed. Some have zippers, pockets, sleeves, shoulder numbers, or large graphics that need to be included in the design.
A mixed group of jerseys and regular T-shirts is very common.
If most of your items are regular cotton T-shirts, your quilt will usually fall into the Original T-shirt Quilt category. If more than half of your items are jerseys, bike shirts, hockey jerseys, football jerseys, running shirts, or technical athletic fabrics, your quilt will most likely fall into the Jersey Quilt category.
Sometimes we cannot make that final decision until we see your items in person. Fabric can be tricky to judge from a photo or a description. Some shirts look like regular T-shirts but behave more like athletic fabric. Other times, a quilt falls somewhere between the two categories.
When that happens, we may average the Original T-shirt Quilt price and the Jersey Quilt price together.
The safest way to plan is to budget for the Jersey Quilt price. If your items do not require that level of handling, we will lower the price.
For most Jersey Quilts, you can use the same estimated number of items as you would for an Original T-shirt Quilt.
But there is a catch. Jerseys are not all the same size, and they do not all have the same amount of usable design area.
Some jerseys have large designs on the front and back. Some have a name and number on the back. Some have sleeve numbers, shoulder logos, patches, pockets, zippers, or small details that can also be used in the quilt.
Because of that, we cannot tell you exactly how many jerseys you need until we see them. We count one jersey as one item, even if we use both the front and the back. But what is on that jersey can change how much space it takes up in the finished quilt.
If your jerseys have large fronts and backs, you may need fewer jerseys. If most of your items have small logos or only one usable side, you may need more.
The easiest way to estimate the price of your Jersey Quilt is to use our pricing calculator.
Jersey Quilts are priced differently than our Original T-shirt Quilts because the fabrics are different. Regular cotton T-shirts are usually easier to cut, sew, and quilt. Jerseys and technical fabric shirts can stretch, slide, curl, have holes, include zippers or pockets, and just act different
That extra handling matters.
A Jersey Quilt may also take more planning because the important parts of the clothing are not always in simple places. Names, numbers, logos, sleeve details, shoulder patches, pockets, and zippers may all need to be worked into the layout.
The pricing calculator will give you the best starting estimate.
If your quilt does not need the extra handling of a Jersey Quilt, we will lower the price. We would rather have you plan for the higher price and be pleasantly surprised than plan too low and get hit with a surprise later.
A Jersey Quilt can have a border, be made in our Stained Glass style, or be designed in an Ultra Modern style.
Jersey fabric does not limit the design options. It just needs to be handled by someone who knows how to work with it.
A border can be added to a Jersey Quilt just like it can be added to an Original T-shirt Quilt. It will increase the finished size and the price because the border is designed, cut, sewn, quilted, and finished as part of the quilt.
Most Jersey Quilts can be made in our Stained Glass style. The main exception is very heavy jersey fabric, such as some hockey jerseys. Those fabrics can be too bulky for the Stained Glass style.
Yes, a Jersey Quilt can be made in our Ultra Modern style. Jerseys often have bold colors, large numbers, and strong graphics, which can work well in this type of design.
If you want a Jersey Quilt with a border, Stained Glass style, or Ultra Modern design, let us know when you start your order. We can build the design around your jerseys and the look you want.
Yes. Regular T-shirts and jerseys can usually be mixed into one Jersey Quilt. A football jersey quilt, for example, can be made with all jerseys or with a mix of jerseys and T-shirts.
The final category and price will depend on the fabrics in your group.
Yes. Mesh jersey fabric can be used in a quilt. Mesh just needs to be handled differently than regular cotton T-shirt fabric because it has holes and behaves differently when it is cut and sewn.

Yes. Zippers and pockets from bike jerseys can often be included in the quilt. They are part of what makes bike jerseys different from regular T-shirts, and they can be an important part of the story.

Yes. Sleeves, shoulder numbers, patches, and smaller logos can often be used. These smaller pieces can help balance the layout and add more detail to the quilt.

No. If the same number appears repeatedly, you may not need every copy in the quilt. A few numbers may tell the story without making the quilt feel repetitive.
If the quilt needs to be larger, numbers from the backs of jerseys can help add size. If the quilt is getting too large, removing duplicate numbers is a good place to start.

Yes! Sometime those are the best part of a quilt and tell the story!

Some can, but not all. Very heavy hockey jersey fabric may be too bulky for the Stained Glass style.
Most other Jersey Quilts can be made in our Stained Glass style.
Of course! If you planned for a Jersey Quilt but your items do not need that level of handling, we will lower the price.
It is better to plan for the higher price and be happy if it comes in lower.
