T-shirt Quilts - What The Best Have In Common

The best T-shirt quilts will have the following in common:

One size block T-shirt quilts will cut part of your image off

Blocks Cut to Fit the Design on the T-shirt

This is the first thing to look for when looking at styles of T-shirt quilts. If all the blocks are the same size, the blocks are not cut to fit the designs on the T-shirts.

In a random stack of T-shirts there could be over 10 different size designs. This is not a one size fits all.

If the blocks are all cut from the same size block, your T-shirts with big designs will have the designs cut off – you don’t want that!  Your t-shirts that have small designs that are forced to fit on the larger block will have a lot of extra T-shirt material around the design. This is a waste of space on the face of your quilt.  Look for a T-shirt quilt style with many different block sizes. Poor Goofy, he was too big for the block size. Read more about the different styles of quilts here.

Interesting Layout

Rows and columns are not interesting – they are boring. Look for a quilt that has the pieces puzzled together. A quilt like this is dynamic and will keep you looking at the quilt longer and will have you wanting to go back and look at it over and over again.

high quality fabrics for T-shirt quilts - a must

High Quality Material

The best T-shirt quilts will be made from high quality materials. The backing material should be a high quality 100% cotton fabric.  Low quality materials will pill. Those are the little balls that form on cheap materials.  This will give your backing material an awful texture and will just look cheap.  Look for quilters that are using a high quality 100% or an 80% cotton/20% poly mix batting. Avoid 100% polyester battings – they are not the good stuff.

T-shirt quilts with interesting quiltingInteresting Quilting

First, the best T-shirt quilts are quilted. If a quilt is tied it's a blanket. If it is nominally quilted, it's not the best. One step up is an overall quilting pattern. This insures that the quilt won’t come undone, but it’s not interesting. An overall quilting pattern is static and is nothing that you will feel compelled to show off.

If you want the best T-shirt quilt, look for ones that have a unique quilting pattern on each block. You will be able to see the quilting on the back of the quilt. Too Cool T-shirt Quilts customers see the back of their quilt and love it as much as they love the front of their quilt. Read more about quilting here.

T-shirt Quilt by Too CoolA Higher Cost

The best T-shirt quilts will cost more because:

  • They are more complicated to make because they have many different size and shape pieces. It will take more time to cut, design and sew.

  • High quality materials will cost more than cheap materials. This will be reflected in the price.

  • Interesting quilting takes time! Humans, not computers, do our quilting. Overall a computer can do pattern quilting. Someone presses the go button and can walk away.  Humans do artwork and you have to pay for their time.

  • A skilled craftsman in any field is compensated for their skills. And quilting is no different. A beginner and an expert are on opposite ends of the pay scale.  Read more about how much a quilt cost here.

So if you are looking for the best T-shirt quilt, you need to expect to pay more for it than you would for a so – so T-shirt quilt. Most people don’t want a so-so quilt; they want a quilt that is Too Cool!

You will like whatever T-shirt quilt is made from your T-shirts because they will be your T-shirts. The best T-shirt quilts are quilts that someone would want even if it were made with a complete stranger’s T-shirts. The best T-shirt quilts have more going on than just the T-shirts.
