Too Cool T-shirt Quilts on the Road

Posted by Andrea Funk

Too Cool T-shirt Quilts displayed our quilts at the 2012 CRIM Health and Fitness expo in Flint Michigan this past weekend.  Here are some of the comments and questions we responded to:

tech fabric can be used in a T-shirt QuiltCan “tech” fabric T-shirts be used in a T-shirt quilt?

Yes they can.  Technical fabrics are those that wick sweat away from the body. They are predominantly made from synthetic fibers.  Moisture-transfer technical fabrics tend to be lightweight and breathable.  And we love the texture they add to a quilt.

Can “tech” shirts be mixed in with other types of T-shirts in a T-shirt Quilt?

Yes. Too Cool T-shirt Quilts can mix any type of washable material into a T-shirt quilt.

I have boxes of T-shirts in the basement.

Wash them before shipping them to us! But not with detergents or fabric softeners that have perfumes in them.  Perfume makes us feel sick and sneeze. And you don’t want us sneezing on your T-shirts!

I have 200 T-shirts.

You have been busy. And that is too many to put into one quilt. You need to go through your T-shirts and break them into smaller categories. The T-shirts can be broken down by: chronology, favorites, race type or length or even color! Think about what size quilt you want and figure out how many T-shirts you need to have in a category. The pricing page on our web site has more information about approximately how many T-shirts you need for a particular size quilt.

My grandmother, mother, sister, niece, aunt or neighbor can make a quilt for me for a lot less than you charge.

Yes they can. But ask yourself the following questions:

  • Can they make an awesome quilt or can they just make a quilt?
  • Will they follow outdated methods for making your quilt?
  • Will the T-shirts just be slapped together or will they take an artistic approach?
  • Will your quilt be their first or even just their 20th T-shirt quilt?
  • Can you see other T-shirt quilts that they have made?
  • Will they use high quality materials?
  • Will they be about to finish it in about 3 to 5 weeks?
  • Are you paying them a reasonable price for their time?
  • Does the cost of the quilt even cover the cost of their materials?

They are a lot of other people making T-shirt quilts. But no one has made more Too Cool style T-shirt quilts than we have. We invented the “variable” style T-shirt quilt. If you have T-shirts that mean so much to you that you can’t bring yourself to toss them out or donate them, then you need to choose the best T-shirt quilt company to make your quilt.

Your quilts are expensive.

You have more invested in your T-shirts than a quilt will cost. And your T-shirts are just sitting in the basement not bringing you any joy. If they are in a T-shirt quilt, you will get to enjoy all the T-shirts and their memories at once.

“I have 25 T-shirts from this particular race. I am thinking about having them made into a T-shirt quilt. What did do you think about it?”

I think you should wait. This is especially so if you have done every single race in a series and plan to continue racing in the series. This quilt needs to wait until you are finished racing in that series. And for many people, it might mean that the quilt will need to be made after you die. Sounds awful, but the T-shirts have more meaning when they are all together. Adding onto T-shirts quilts successfully is impossible. Some sewers will claim that they can do it, but it will never turn out as well as the original quilt. So wait. If you are concerned that the quilt might never be made, put it in your will.

Too Cool T-shirt Quilts will be exhibiting at the 2012 Detroit Marathon Expo in COBO Center in Detroit Michigan on October 19 – 21. We hope to see you there!
